Coated Work Gloves Explained: Nitrile, Polyurethane, Latex, and PVC — Which Coating for Which Job

A contractor called us last spring convinced he'd been sold a defective batch of gloves. His crew's palm coatings were "peeling off in a week," and he wanted replacements. When we asked what they were handling, the answer told the whole story: engine parts, chain lube, and solvent rags. The gloves weren't defective. They were latex-coated, and latex and petroleum do not get along. He didn't need a better glove — he needed a different coating. That single decision, which coating to put against the hand, drives more of a glove's real-world performance than the price, the color, or the brand on the cuff. Match the coating to the contaminant, not the label
Every coating datasheet lists a wall of ratings, but the decision usually comes down to two questions: what is the hand touching, and how much finger feel does the task require? A "cut resistant" or "general purpose" label tells you nothing about how the coating will hold up against oil, cold, or repeated flexing. The chemistry does. Work through the coatings below in the order your job actually stresses them, and the right choice tends to fall out on its own.
Nitrile: the oil and abrasion default
Nitrile is synthetic rubber, and unlike natural latex it shrugs off petroleum. Cutting oils, grease, hydraulic fluid, and diesel don't swell or soften it, which is why it has become the default palm coating for anyone working around machinery or metal. It also carries the best abrasion life of the four — a foamed or micro-foam nitrile palm will typically outlast a latex one on rough stock by a wide margin. The trade-off is a slightly stiffer hand than latex and a higher cost per pair. For most maintenance, fabrication, and warehouse crews, a nitrile-coated work glove is the safe first guess, and it's the coating we point buyers toward when they can only stock one style. If oil resistance matters but you also want a lighter, more breathable feel, a micro-foam nitrile on a seamless nylon shell splits the difference well.
Polyurethane: dexterity and touchscreen work
Polyurethane is the thin-coating specialist. It's applied in a much lighter layer than nitrile or latex, so it preserves finger feel — the kind of tactile precision you need to seat a fastener, sort small components, or run a touchscreen without stripping a glove off. PU also sheds very few particles, which is why it shows up in electronics and inspection work where a shedding coating would contaminate the part. Its oil and abrasion resistance are respectable, close to nitrile in many tests, but the thin film wears through faster under heavy, rough handling. Reach for a polyurethane-coated grip glove when the job is about precision and dexterity rather than survival against a sharp, greasy edge.
Latex: grip and cold tolerance, but keep it away from oil
Natural latex has the highest elasticity of the common coatings, and that elasticity translates into grip — a crinkle-finish latex palm bites into dry material better than almost anything at its price point. It also stays flexible in the cold, where nitrile can stiffen, which makes it a common choice for construction, landscaping, and general dry lifting. Two cautions keep it out of some workplaces. First, petroleum destroys it; the contractor from the opening paragraph learned that the hard way. Second, natural rubber latex can trigger allergic reactions, so it's often banned outright in food and healthcare settings. Where the work is dry and grip is the priority, a latex-coated glove with a textured palm is hard to beat on cost and feel.
PVC dots: reinforcement on a breathable shell
PVC dots aren't a full palm coating at all — they're small polymer studs printed onto a cotton or jersey glove. That design keeps the shell breathable while adding grip and a wear surface exactly where the hand needs it. Because many dotted gloves are knit the same on both sides, you can flip them over when one face wears down and effectively double the service life. They won't survive oil or sharp edges the way a dipped coating will, but for light warehouse handling, boxes, and general duty in dry conditions, a reversible PVC-dot glove is one of the lowest cost-per-shift options on the shelf.
A five-question sort
When a buyer isn't sure where to start, we run through five questions in order and stop at the first one that rules something out:
- Is there oil, grease, or fuel? If yes, cross off latex. Nitrile or PU.
- Is latex banned or an allergy risk? Food, healthcare, or a sensitized worker means nitrile, PU, or PVC only.
- Does the task need fine finger feel? If yes, lean polyurethane; if no, nitrile or latex give more coverage and wear.
- Is abrasion the main killer? Rough stock and long shifts favor foamed nitrile for coating life.
- Is it light, dry, general handling on a budget? PVC-dot or a basic latex dip will do the job for less.
Coating is only half the glove
Two gloves with the same coating can still feel completely different because the coating sits on a knit shell, and the shell's fineness — its gauge — controls thickness, dexterity, and how much cut protection the glove carries. A heavy 10-gauge shell with nitrile is a different tool than a thin 18-gauge shell with the same coating.
